Viking Naming Traditions and Customs
In Old Norse society, names held deep spiritual and familial significance. Here are some interesting facts about how the Vikings named their children:
- Deity Associations: Many Viking names incorporated the names of Norse gods to invoke protection and power. Prefixes or suffixes like "Thor" (e.g., Thorstein, Torvi) were extremely common.
- Patronymic Surnames: Vikings did not have permanent family surnames. Instead, they used patronymics (or sometimes matronymics). A son of Ragnar would have the surname Ragnarsson, and a daughter would be Ragnarsdottir.
- Honorifics & Nicknames: Vikings often received descriptive descriptors based on their accomplishments, appearance, or temperament, such as Ragnar "Lodbrok" (Hairy Breeches) or Ivar "the Boneless".
